Dear Parents and Carers of Year 6 children,
First, a warm welcome to Year 6. This is an important transition time for your child as they start to get closer to secondary school. With this in mind, we have put together a few details to help your child adapt to school life in Year 6.
READING
In Year 6, children are starting to become more independent readers. However, children will still need to read /discuss the text with a parent on a regular basis to check their understanding of the book and improve reading skills. It is recommended that children read for 15-20 minutes every day at home. This can include their own reading book from school, a new book from home or Reading Plus activities. Children will receive a reading record card (orange) to note their daily reading on. Please sign this to confirm the pages read. Children will be asked to complete a reading comment, in the cream book provided, every other week and as they begin to read longer texts, the comment may just focus on a few chapters or a given text. We encourage children to vary their comments by using the teacher’s guidance which will be discussed in a reading session on alternate Thursdays and an example will be stuck in the back of their comment book.
Your child is to hand in their comment book on a THURSDAY where they will need to hand in a written comment based on a text and the guidance and sticker given the previous week.
On the alternate week children will be asked to complete a couple of activities on Reading Plus (excluding vocabulary) instead of their written comment, thus ensuring a wide range of texts and genres are read and giving an opportunity for children to answer a range of questions.
Please ensure that you check your child has produced a well written comment and sign the signature box as evidence and that you check your child has completed the Reading Plus activities on the appropriate weeks. Thank you.
SPELLING
Each Wednesday, children will receive a spelling list to learn and a relevant activity to be completed. We would like the books to be brought to school on a Wednesday ready for the test and new lists. Spellings will be tested using a closed procedure as happens in the end of year SPAG test. The children will take part in various spelling activities in class throughout the week to help them learn their spellings.
HOMEWORK
Children will be advised on a weekly basis as to what they need to complete and this will be monitored by staff. They will receive a Homework Timetable from staff for reference at home.
Hopefully this information will give you a good guide to what’s going on in our classroom. However, there are some occasions when days must be changed due to holidays, other events in school or changes to current Government guidance.
