Music Statement of Intent
The teachers of St. James’ Catholic Primary School say…..
Music has many benefits for children of all ages and is an extremely important subject for all children to learn. Music can lead to better brain development and is a great way to enhance reading comprehension abilities in children. Music also increases human connection and can even aids stress relief.
Music education is important because it gives children a way to connect with other people and encourages effective communication for example when working in pairs or small groups to create a piece of music. Children are naturally very social; it is important to encourage children to build relationships by providing them with shared experiences. Engaging children in the choir, wider opportunities and school productions encourages children make decisions and work together towards a final product. This encourages bonding and provides children and their families with something to reminisce on together in the future. It has been proven time and again that having people of all ages playing or listening to music together will help to create bonds. Creating opportunities such as Samba, drumming, WOWS concert, Pop Project, Key Stage singing or just listening to and enjoying a piece of recorded music can spark curiosity and connect children through sound, singing and even movement or dance. Musical experiences such as these can bring back a fond memory and create new ones!
Music education is important as it integrates so many different subject areas all at once. Music not only allows children to develop their musical skills; it will also give them the opportunity to work on their math skills, reading and writing skills, science skills, and history knowledge. Additionally, discussing how instruments work will involve information on the physics of sound, and learning about music’s place in society will shine a light on important historical events.
Music teaches children to develop time management skills and discipline, especially if they are learning instruments and practicing outside of school. Learning an instrument requires personal organisation as children need to remember to practise regularly and arrive on time to lessons. Practicing a piece of music or song encourages resilience and self-reflection. For example, Year Four children rehearse together before they put on a performance for their families each term.
Finally, music is an excellent way to relieve stress, which is significant for children who may feel overwhelmed by schoolwork and trying to balance extracurricular activities.
